Medicare Supplement Insurance
Medicare provides a lot of coverage, but it doesn’t cover everything. If you need supplemental coverage, then Medicare Supplement insurance may be for you. Medicare Supplement policies supplement Original Medicare. They can help you pay for some of the health-care costs associated with Original Medicare, including co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn’t, like medical care outside of the U.S. Medicare Supplement policies are sold by private insurance companies and have a monthly premium. In order to qualify for them, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B.

Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans
A special needs plan (SNP) is a Medicare Advantage (MA) coordinated care plan (CCP) specifically designed to provide targeted care and limit enrollment to special needs individuals. A special needs individual could be any one of the following:
-
An institutionalized individual,
-
A dual eligible. An individual eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.
-
An individual with a severe or disabling chronic condition, as specified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Prescription Drug Plans
Also known as Part D, prescription drug plans help pay for costs associated with prescriptions. Not all part D plans cover the same drugs, have the same deductibles, co-pays, or coinsurance.
Each Part D plan has its own “Formulary” which is a list of drugs covered by the plan. This holds true whether it is a stand-alone Part D plan or one included automatically with a Part C-Medicare Advantage-MAPD plan.
Each drug on the plan’s formulary is assigned to a “Tier” which determines the cost sharing between the plan member and the insurance company. Typically, the higher "Tier" a drug is assigned, the higher the cost.
Before choosing a Part D plan, it is important to see if all your medications are on the plan’s formulary and which tier each of your medications are assigned. This will assist in projecting your medication costs.
